Fall Garden Tour: Arcadia Garden
On a foggy morning in Fall, I visited a lovely garden in Arcadia designed by renowned designer Judy Horton. The informal tour was part of the Southern California Horticultural Society’s Coffee in the Garden series, which features gardens owned by the Society’s members. Working with an established, 30-year-old landscape already featuring beautiful specimen plants and trees, Horton removed 10,000 square feet of lawn, adding a sycamore grove to screen an existing tennis court, an olive terrace and extensive Mediterranean plantings, a wonderful fig espaliered in the form of a goblet, and more. The result is a landscape of quiet beauty and delight.
- Vitis californica ‘Roger’s Red’ and Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’ cohabit an arbor.
- A dwarf pomegranate beginning to color up.
- Balls of lavender, Rosemary, Olive ‘Little Ollie’, Westringia ‘Morning Light’ and Teucrium chamaedrys tumble toward the lawn.
- Judy Horton (right) and Libby Simon displaying “before” and “after” plans of the garden.
- Eupatoriaum sordidum
- Fig goblet.
- Looking across the pool toward the olive tree allee.
